Compulsory primary education, free education for girls up to class ten, stipends for female students, food-for-education, total literacy movement and nationwide integrated non-formal education are some of the major characteristics of the education sector Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has 21 government and 51 non-government universities. The number of govt. and non-govt. medical colleges stand at 13 and 5 respectively. There are 4 engineering colleges, 2845 colleges, 20 polytechnic institutes, 12553 secondary schools, and 787595 primary schools.
